Brentano House

The Brentano House in Oestrich-Winkel is one of the memorials of German Romanticism. Its most famous guest, the poet prince Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was the first to write it into literary history. The museum setting, a garden and a restaurant are actually all you need for a wonderful excursion into this cultural and historical era on the Rhine.

History

The Brentano House in Oestrich-Winkel is a site preserved in the original. Anyone who wants to get to know the lifestyle on the Rhine around 1800, is interested in the history of the Brentano family and is looking for traces of the Romantic era should head for the beautiful estate in the Rheingau with its restaurant and garden. The visit is also a journey into literary history. The house’s reputation was founded by writers such as Bettina von Arnim (1785-1859) and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). They ensured that it is perceived today as a centre of Rhine Romanticism, although it never really was.
