Our cultural treasures
The Niederwald. One book - two sights. Take the time to walk and look at the two monuments at the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Trace the respective spirit of the times: in Ostein’s Niederwald, which is a creation in the landscape, and at the Niederwald Monument, which commemorates war and the founding of the German Empire. A walk through the “ornamental forest” founded by Karl Maximilian Count of Ostein (1735-1809) gives you the pleasure of enjoying the nature of a forest rich in species and views of the Rhine valley. At the same time, it introduces you to an important period of garden art from the end of the 18th century. The monument with the colossal Germania is also located on the grounds of the historic park forest. It takes you back to an eventful epoch in German history, as a result of which a nation state was founded. Subsequently, many meaningful monuments were erected in the German Empire. The Niederwald Monument proclaims the political messages of that time.

Among the German Staufen castles, the architecture and architectural sculpture of the Gelnhausen pfalz, with its Upper Rhine-Alsatian and Southern French forms, is the most artistically refined. But with the end of the Staufen dynasty and the pfalz system in the 13th century, the complex lost its importance. A period of decay set in. What is now only in ruins was once the seat of administration, including a farmyard, a place of adjudication, receptions, feasts and imperial diets. Thomas Biller explains the significance of the building, which was used as a seat of government, on the basis of individual building elements and ornaments and sheds light on various reconstruction attempts.

Anyone visiting and exploring Bad Homburg Palace and Palace Park today will essentially encounter three overlapping layers of time: the Middle Ages, the landgravial period and the imperial phase under Prussian influence. Among the German palaces, Bad Homburg Palace has a particularly unique position: It is the only site dedicated to the residential culture of the last German emperors and empresses. This volume provides you with the most important key data on the building history, the central personalities, the furnishings of the palace and the development of the impressive palace park.

Research
This conference volume brings together the contributions to the international conference on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the German Empire, which took place in June 2021 at Bad Homburg Palace under the patronage of Hesse’s Minister President Volker Bouffier.
The volume brings together the contributions of eleven authors from academia and institutional practice who focus on three areas and bring them into context: They name interpretations of the empire that manifested themselves in various publications on the anniversary and revived old controversies about the interpretation of the period from 1871 to 1918; they take stock of research that is differentiating itself in ever new topics beyond historiographical disputes; and they question the opportunities and challenges of didactic mediation of the empire in schools, museums and at historical sites.

Catalogues
The Temple of Pomona has been reconstructed in the palace park of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. The exterior has a largely historical appearance, while the interior shows the world of historical apple and pear varieties in a modern design language with 158 exhibits and 68 information texts: entirely in the spirit of the eponymous Roman goddess of tree fruits.
This book brings together all the contents of the permanent exhibition for you to read: The history of the 4 x 4 m garden building, the landscaped part of the garden - the Fantasy - and the stately orchard are presented. The focus is on the wide world of Pomona: the origin, botany, culture and use of fruit as well as the historical varieties themselves on display.
Short texts, strong graphics and photos make complex knowledge about pomology, garden art and garden monument preservation vivid.

On the 250th anniversary of the birth of Landgravine Elizabeth of Hesse-Homburg (London 1770 - Frankfurt am Main 1840), the exhibition “Princess Eliza - English Impulses for Hesse-Homburg” tells the fascinating story of the British princess who married into the family.
In her new home, the probably most important landgravine of Hesse-Homburg unleashed a flurry of activities to modernise Bad Homburg Palace and to promote the impoverished landgraviate. She came from Britain with modern ideas, loved her new tasks and wanted to be useful.
The artist and collector also possessed a versatile library. With great passion, Landgravine Elizabeth expanded the Bad Homburg garden landscape.
According to the latest research, she had hundreds of plants from the famous Kew Gardens near London delivered to Homburg. These green imports made a contribution to Bad Homburg’s garden art that is still relevant today.
