Information for visitors with reduced mobility and wheelchair users
- Parking facilities
-
Designated disabled parking spaces are available and signposted in the car park on Nibelungenstraße (enter “Nibelungenstraße 12” into your sat-nav / next to Holzhandlung Koch). Further marked disabled parking spaces can be found in the car park behind the Volksbank Bergstraße, Bahnhofstr. 15–17.
The paths from the car parks to the monastery grounds, the museum centre and the Lauresham Open-air laboratory are paved or tarmacked and largely level.
- Travelling by public transport
-
From Lorsch railway station, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to Lorsch town centre. The walk to the Lauresham Open-air laboratory takes about 30 minutes.
- Toilets
-
Disabled-accessible toilets are available at the (MUZ) and the Visitor Information Centre (BIZ), and are accessible at any time during opening hours. There is a further disabled-accessible toilet on the monastery grounds, in the tithe barn. This is open only during special events. In addition, there is an accessible toilet with an automatic door opener on the nearby Karolingerplatz.
- Wheelchairs and stools for hire
-
Wheelchairs can be hired at the Museum Centre and the Visitor Information Centre. Stools are available for hire at the Museum Centre, the Tithe Barn and the Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory. Pushchairs are also provided at Lauresham for families with young children.
- Access to the monastery grounds
-
Wheelchair access to the monastery grounds is via Benediktinerplatz. Within the grounds, the main areas are connected by continuous, paved paths with black cobblestones. Between the Königshalle and the church ruins, there is a gentle incline of approximately 4 per cent. A metal grating surface ensures that this section is accessible by wheelchair.
The Tithe Barn is accessible without steps. Both the Adalher House and the Electoral House have a single step at their entrances.
The Königshalle can be viewed from the outside. Access to the upper floor is via a historic spiral staircase and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
- Access to the herb garden
-
The herb garden is designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. The plants are arranged on dry stone walls at a height that is easy to see. However, the paths within the garden are relatively narrow, which means that it can be difficult for wheelchairs to pass each other in some places.
- Access to the Museum Centre (MUZ)
-
The Museumszentrum has been recognised as senior-friendly and is fully accessible. A lift provides access to all floors of the building. All exhibition and function rooms are accessible without steps. The doors are designed to accommodate wheelchair users.
- Access to the Visitor Information Centre (BIZ)
-
The Visitor Information Centre (BIZ) is accessible at ground level via a small bridge. There is a low threshold only at the entrance to the shop. The toilets and workshop rooms are accessible without any thresholds.
The path leading to the outdoor area at Lauresham has a slight gradient of around 3 per cent.
The Visitor Information Centre (BIZ) and Lauresham are generally only accessible on foot. In justified cases, a special permit may be granted to access the site by car. Applications for this should be made at least one day before the visit.
- Access to the Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory
-
Most of the paths in the Open-air Laboratory have water-bound surfaces.
The barn, the manor house and the church are accessible to visitors with disabilities. The other replica buildings are not wheelchair-accessible due to limited space, high thresholds and structural constraints. However, they can be viewed from the outside and at close range.
